Alex is loosely based on the beautiful weedy dragons of Port Philip and Western Port Bays, Victoria, Australia. It is a sculptural piece presented in a glass dome standing approximately 30cm high with a diametre of 20cm.

The body is constructed mostly from waste and found materials including off-cuts from a roller blind and a spiral binding coil. Each of the discs are individually painted and stitched by hand and sewing machine using a variety of threads. The head is silk embellished with French knots.

About Samantha

I am a mixed media textile artist who creates framed and sculptural pieces usually by manipulating and stitching contrasting materials.

My work is inspired by the fascinating diversity, beauty and quirkiness of the World, particularly the colour, movement and incredible shapes found in the fragile gardens of shallow seas. The tactile act of construction informs all my pieces. I hope they make you smile.
