Before making this piece I had worked on a project to hand print original fabrics using objects you find around the house. I then stitched into them and made some interesting pieces of fabric. I wanted to take this idea a step further and make some usable art pieces based on the same methods. The blue circles were printed individually onto natural linen using a cork. I then created movement with the layout of the stitches, which added texture as I stitched into a layer of cotton wadding to give body to the purse. Art is meant to be enjoyed and handling textile art is part of the experience, I want people to use and enjoy my work in a practical way, so it brings a little luxury to everyday life.

About Colette

I’m a textile designer and screen printer and love to use hand stitching to embellish my work and add texture. My fabrics are modern, simplistic designs printed in rich colours, there is a retro / Scandinavian feel to my work with soft shapes at the heart of each design.
Using traditional craft skills is an important part of my process, the slow, meditative repetition of both printing and stitching brings peace to my practice in a fast paced world.
I work from my garden studio, which gives me the benefits of working around family life whilst having a quiet space to be creative.
