I have created a family memoir, with all the characters, metaphorically replaced by my “short pose” life studies taken from my sketch book. My template was The Triumph of Music by Marc Chagall.
I have used cadmium red, similar to Chagall, as I frequently do. It is straight out of the tube (oil paints). The figures are stylised and they are predominately white with colourful accents. Figures float around a flaming sun symbol and are linked by stylised flora and fauna. Every mark/object has a meaning. I have stretched linen onto wooden frames myself and prepared the surface with gesso primer.
This piece was originally meant for the Harrow Art Society Presidents Prize, the task being to create a memoir either directly or through a dream. I wasn’t able to meet their deadline. I did, however, display my extensive rough sketches, notes and photographs. It was completed some 4 months later during the early part of lockdown.

I am fascinated by the landscape of the body. This inspires me to depict my life drawings as metaphorical portraits. I have a range of subject of matter which I use to enhance and challenge my creativity, I am a gestural markmaker and I love to experiment with mixed media eg charcoal and ink, I am equally at home with the traditional medium of oils.
My long time attendance of life classes has developed a passion to teach my own life drawing sessions to nurture others in their artistic expression. This has progressed my character no end and has become a powerful tool of empowerment.
