@The White Cube Gallery, Harrow Arts Centre

Exhibition to run

13th February to 2nd March 2023

Harrow Arts Centre

The White Cube Gallery

171 Uxbridge Rd, Pinner HA5 4EA

The Gallery will be Open to the public between 10 am and 5pm weekdays.

What is A Celebration of Art about?

It is exactly that – a celebration of the art that is being created in Harrow by creative people living and working in Harrow.

Running from Monday 13th February until Thursday 2nd March this exhibition displays the talent of over 70 different artists from 8 years to 88 years old.  The work is diverse and vibrant, very reflective of Harrow people and it deserves to be celebrated.

Over 250,000 people live in Harrow.  There is a thriving community of artists, art groups and creative enterprises in the borough, but only one small facility offered as a free public space designated for displaying visual art exhibitions – the White Cube Gallery in Harrow Art Centre.  In 2022 it was decided to close this gallery space and repurpose it into an office.  There had been no consultation and the plans had been put in place without informing those artists and community groups who use the gallery.

When we heard about this Harrow Open Studio artists launched a campaign to save the gallery for its intended use.  The gallery was initially set up in 2012 with lottery funding by a group of artists in Harrow and it was saved from closure by a group of artists in Harrow.  If we want to ensure that it stays as a designated art gallery, we need to use it.  If we want to show that there is a need for a better facility for the hundreds of thousands of people in Harrow we need to fill it to bursting with the art that is already happening in Harrow. This exhibition is part of this campaign, to celebrate the gallery and the art in Harrow, to show the people of Harrow that they are a creative force, to introduce them to the fact that they have a gallery they can use and to work towards a better public gallery in the future.

Come and see what your neighbours have created and tell everybody about it.

“I was delighted to be part of Queen’s platinum jubilee celebrations, organised by Harrow Hill Trust, London, on 2nd June. I painted a portrait of Her Majesty the Queen, live at the venue. It was an exciting moment for me, personally and as an artist, creating a royal portrait, and receiving the enthusiastic support and appreciation of the audience present.

The realistic style of the portrait captures Her likeness.  While the background in my usual style of rhythmism depicts the cycle and continuity of life through its movements which are it’s very essence.”

Harinder is an exciting and versatile artist whose genres span portraiture, landscape and still life. Her beautiful watercolours and oils range from the subtle and thoughtful to the vibrant and dynamic.

In 2022, Harinder decided to take a break from teaching and is now fully immersed in developing her own work. She has a particular interest in faces and people, believing that the painted portrait speaks to people in a way that the written word and photography cannot.

About her work, Harinder says,

“I have always been an observer. There is nothing I like more than sitting observing faces – seeing the way the light falls, where the shadows are and imaging how I would capture this in paint. As the philosopher Aristotle has been attributed to say “The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance; for this, and not the external mannerism and detail, is true art.”

This has always resonated with me, as I have striven for depth in my painting, rather than surface.”
